In order to boost the regional economic cooperation among Central, West and South Asian and European countries, and to promote the all-round development of Xinjiang, the Chinese government decided to upgrade China Urumqi Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Fair (Urumqi Fair) to China-Eurasia Expo from 2011 and hold it in Urumqi, China every September.

Advocated by then Premier Li Peng in 1992, the 1st Urumqi Fair was held in Urumqi, Xinjiang. Over the past 19 years, the Fair has been increasingly influential in the world, has become a bridge linking China and the rest of the world, especially Central, West and South Asia as well as a major window open to the West in economic trade, and has boosted regional economic cooperation and development. It can be said to have witnessed the constant development of China’s opening up to the West, have made Xinjiang a business logistics center linking Asia and Europe, and have reproduced the spectacular view of merchant gathering in Urumqi, known as a famous ancient city on the Silk Road.

China-Eurasia Expo is inheritance and sublimation of Urumqi Fair. The exposition will undoubtedly be a higher-grade, larger and more influential event. Chen Deming, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of China-Eurasia Expo and Minister of Commerce, said the Exposition is not only a simple expansion of Urumqi Fair, but also an all-round improvement in area, level and scale. It will extend from Central and South Asia to the rest of Asia and Europe.

The Chinese government attaches great importance to China-Eurasia Expo by establishing the organizing committee with Vice Premier Wang Qishan as honorary chairman and the Minister of Commerce and Chairman of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region as chairmen, and establishing the exposition’s permanent institution- Xinjiang Bureau of International Exposition Affairs to undertake the work of the secretariat of the organizing committee.

Abundant in water, land, solar and thermal resources, rich in natural products, Xinjiang is a beautiful and fertile land in west China. It boasts favorable conditions for the development of agriculture, animal husbandry and characteristic farming; considerable mineral resources; distinctive tourist resources, colorful folk customs, marvelous natural landscape as well as varied historical and cultural sites, thus having great potential for tourist development; as the host city of China-Eurasia Expo, it enjoys geographical and humanistic superiorities in bilateral communication between China and Eurasia. Neighboring eight countries, with 17 Category I open ports, it is an important bridge linking China to Central, West and South Asian and European countries. Since the launch of the reform and opening up, under the attention and support of the central government, Xinjiang has grown rapidly. In 2010, Xinjiang achieved a GDP of RMB 541.88 billion, up 10.6% year on year. As the overall agricultural production capacity improved year by year, Xinjiang has become a primary production base for quality commodity cotton, hop and tomato sauce as well as a major production base for beet sugar and animal products. As the industrial economy grew fast, Xinjiang has formed a large-scale modern industrial system based on the development of mineral resources and deep processing of agricultural and sideline products and involving petroleum, petrochemical, iron and steel, coal, electric power, textile and light industry; Xinjiang‘s tertiary industry has emerged rapidly, with tourism, trade, real estate, modern logistics and post and telecommunications developing vigorously, the financial system improving constantly and information networks becoming increasingly smooth. Xinjiang has achieved remarkable effects in infrastructural construction and significantly improved its investment environment. A first-class international convention and exhibition center in northwest China has been built in Urumqi, which involves around 2,500 indoor international standard booths and an outdoor exhibition area of 45,000 square meters. With a complete range of facilities such as simultaneous interpretation system, press center, multifunctional hall and conference hall, the center can satisfy the demands of large international conventions and exhibitions.

Xinjiang has accomplished fast economic development and maintained social stability. In the vibrant economic environment, people of all nationalities in Xinjiang are living and working in peace and contentment. The Chinese government has been geared up for China-Eurasia Expo. We believe that the exposition will create more business opportunities. We sincerely welcome governments, chambers of commerce, associations, intermediaries, investors, traders and enterprises in Central, West and South Asian and European countries and regions to the exposition to share cooperation and development opportunities and jointly promote regional economic and social development.
